The rain and lightning finally went away and Saturday, May 6 arrived with a bright blue sky for the District 12 – Class 8A championship between Wellington and Royal Palm Beach.
Behind the pitching of senior John Campagnuolo and a 6-run scoring burst in the second inning, the host Wolverines (21-6) defeated the Wildcats (17-10), 8-2, to capture the title. Wellington last won a district title in 2008.
Campagnuolo threw five innings, allowing just one run on four hits and eight strikeouts.
Senior Angelo Brunelas gathered two hits, including a double and three RBIs. Sophomores Aiden Burr and Tyler Retzler each added two RBIs while junior Danny Hernandez contributed an RBI double.
Wellington now advances to the Regional Quarterfinals, facing Lakeland (15-9) at 7pm on Tuesday at the Wellington Field. Royal Palm Beach goes on the road to face George Jenkins (19-7).
